Entertainment Weekly picks the 20 worst comic book movies ever
Here's a link to EW's list, but in the interests of my lazy readers, I provide the list for you, along with snide commentary by me where I disagree in some way:

20: Ghost Rider
19: The Shadow (er, okay, but this didn't start out as a comic book and so should not be on this list; the character first appeared on the radio and then in prose short stories in the pulps, not being done as a comic strip until much later)
18: Barb Wire (hey, this was actually fun -- and true to the source material, honestly)
17: Catwoman (I'd rank this way higher...)
16: Brenda Starr (ditto)
15: The Phantom (this actually wasn't that bad a movie, though the tag line of "Slam Evil!" should get some kind of award for worst tag line ever)
14: Daredevil (I despised this movie for reasons I explain in this rant on my web site)
13: Tank Girl (gotta agree with EW's Marc Bernardin here: this wasn't made for live-action, as it were...)
12: Fantastic Four (I'm sorry, but anybody who calls Michael Chiklis and Chris Evans "bland and overrated" should be banned from ever reviewing movies, and to rank this perfectly enjoyable piece of fluff higher on the list than Catwoman, Brenda Starr, and Daredevil is absurd)
11: Sheena
10: The Punisher (this is for the 2004 film with Thomas Jane, not the 1988 one with Dolph Lundgren, which was far far far far worse)
9: Supergirl
8: Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy (feh; it's a classic, for all that it's trash...)
7: Howard the Duck
6: Steel (Bernardin gets fifty lashes with Steel's hammer for dissing the excellent John Henry Irons comic book character on which the movie's based; however, the movie belongs on the list ferdamnsure)
5: Swamp Thing
4: Batman & Robin (however, nipples on the batsuit were the absolute least of this abomination's faults; seriously, this movie had absolutely no relationship with the human condition)
3: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
2: Superman IV: The Quest for Peace
1: Judge Dredd (actually, the first 15 minutes of this film are fantastically brilliant; it goes way off the rails after that)

Also: where the fuck are Spider-Man 3 and X-Men: The Last Stand, both of which are several dozen orders of magnitude worse than most of what's on the above list?

Current Mood: geeky geeky
Current Music: "Last Man at the Party" by Jethro Tull

I loved Fantastic Four. Actually, I love most comic book/hero movies that I see.

But I'm sorta cheesy like that. Also, in most cases, I am relatively clueless to the "truth" behind the stories.

Of course, I also love it when Sci Fi shows cheesy disaster movies. In fact, I have several on my DVR right now... :)

Judge Dredd was fabulous, as long as you shut your eyes whenever wossname the comic relief was onscreen. I also have a lot of love for Tank Girl. On the other hand, I've never read the original version of either.

wossname the comic relief = Rob Schneider

I must admit...

I have much love for both Batman & Robin and the 1988 Punisher.

Entertainment Weekly can kiss my shiny metal ass. The Shadow is a wonderful film. I love it! It had just the right amount of mystic wierdness, plus Alec Baldwin, Penelope Ann Miller, Jonathan Winters, Tim Curry, Ian McKellan and John Lone! You can't go wrong with that!
drewshi From: [info]drewshi Date: March 29th, 2008 11:37 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm there with you about The Shadow. I also loved The Phantom. I was impressed that they didn't really try to beef up Zane too much in the costume and it worked well.
dewline From: [info]dewline Date: March 29th, 2008 01:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thirding that motion!
djonn From: [info]djonn Date: March 29th, 2008 06:14 am (UTC) (Link)
Hmm. I skipped a number of those, but I'd certainly agree with you about Fantastic Four.

However, The Shadow is not the only film incorrectly ascribed to a comic-book origin. Both Brenda Starr and The Phantom are properly comic strip characters rather than comic book characters, such that neither film strictly belongs in a listing of "comic book movies". (I rather liked both Shadow and Phantom, though I'd agree that neither was anywhere near a definitive interpretation.)

Nor is this as nit-picky a distinction as one might think -- because if films derived explicitly from comic strip characters are eligible, we ought to at least nod in the direction of the two Garfield features, and one can reasonably discuss Dick Tracy, Prince Valiant, and perhaps one or another of the Annie films (I seem to recall that there was at least one sequel to the original musical).

Also, what do you do with the 1966 Adam West Batman feature, which is at least as cheesetastic as a number of the films mentioned?
kradical From: [info]kradical Date: March 29th, 2008 12:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
I see your point, though I seem to be the only person alive besides Warren Beatty who liked Dick Tracy. And it's possible that the EW staff thought these 20 were worse than Prince Valiant, Garfield, and Annie. After all, they actually put Fantastic Four and Barbarella on the list in the first place. *shrug*

And I wouldn't put the 1966 Batman on a list of worst movies because, yes, it was cheesetastic, but it knew it was cheesetastic going in (which is why Barbarella doesn't really belong on this list, either). Besides, I suspect they were trying not to repeat franchises (an understandable instinct when making a list like this), and if you can only pick one Batflick, then B&R gets the rotten tomato, cowls down.
altariel From: [info]altariel Date: March 29th, 2008 10:12 am (UTC) (Link)
We walked out of Daredevil. In fact, it's the film that made us seriously reconsider how often we went to the cinema. After we walked out, we went down to Borders and bought a DVD of The Italian Job for about the same price our two tickets had cost and, as we sat in the comfort of our home watching the Mini joy unfold on the widescreen telly, we looked at each other and went, "Hmmm...."

I loved The Fantastic Four! I thought it was charming and fun! And I thought that about the second one too. The little girl in the seat next to me was all screwed up in her chair from excitement, with her knuckles in her mouth. And the film sneakily told her things about how torture is a bad thing, and how being smart and geeky is at least as good as being a jock, and probably a bit better.
cradok From: [info]cradok Date: March 29th, 2008 12:30 pm (UTC) (Link)
LXG really doesn't belong on the list. If you view it as a purely action movie, it's better than most on that list, and as an adaptation of source material, there was no way that anything even remotely 'faithful' to the comic was going to be even remotely filmable.
boogiebabe_smap From: [info]boogiebabe_smap Date: March 29th, 2008 01:33 pm (UTC) (Link)
I agree. Besides, I really enjoyed the movie. There were a LOT of changes from the original -- not least of which the promotion of Quartermain and the demotion of Mina, but what are you going to do when the only "name" star they could get was playing Quartermain? -- but I thought it was well acted and well paced. And the immortal-on-immortal fight was impressive.
boogiebabe_smap From: [info]boogiebabe_smap Date: March 29th, 2008 01:51 pm (UTC) (Link)
20: Ghost Rider -- for the most part the movie was disappointing, but the ride of the two Ghost Riders across the desert was worth the price of admission for me. (I saw it at a cheap show.) In my opinion, this should have been MUCH higher on the list.

19: The Shadow -- agree that this wasn't a comic book movie per se. I thought it was a decent movie.

18: Barb Wire -- Never saw. Never even heard of.
17: Catwoman -- Never saw.
16: Brenda Starr -- Never saw. (agree: comic strip movie.)

15: The Phantom -- Not bad. Have seen much worse. (comic strip movie)

14: Daredevil -- Never saw.
13: Tank Girl -- Never saw.

12: Fantastic Four -- REALLY liked this movie. The Thing was well played and Johnny Storm was EXACTLY right in my opinion.

11: Sheena -- Never saw.
10: The Punisher -- eh.
9: Supergirl -- Never saw.
8: Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy -- Fun.

7: Howard the Duck -- I seem to be the only person on the planet who kinda liked Howard the Duck. Even Lucas (who created it) tries to deny his connections with it.

6: Steel -- Never saw.
5: Swamp Thing -- Never saw.

4: Batman & Robin -- George Clooney was just not right for Batman and Ah-nold was chewing scenery left and right. And don't get me started on Batgirl... But I'd watch a film of Chris O'Donnell breathing. (Hey, girls can enjoy eye candy too!)

3: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen -- I really enjoyed this movie, despite all the changes from the original source.

2: Superman IV: The Quest for Peace -- Never saw.
1: Judge Dredd -- Never saw.
popfiend From: [info]popfiend Date: March 29th, 2008 02:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thank God you never saw Superman IV.

If Keith and I ever discuss this movie, you will hear us reference Superman and his amazing "REPAIR GREAT WALL OF CHINA" vision.

No joke.

It's a stink you can NEVER get off.

20: Ghost Rider [I actually liked this. Okay, Nic Cage, I'm predisposed. But it was gloriously bad]
19: The Shadow [saw it on network broadcast and didn't mind it much]
18: Barb Wire [I suspect guys were more entertained by this movie tan most females....]
17: Catwoman [so bad you can't look away...]
16: Brenda Starr [never saw it]
15: The Phantom [I remember this as being more boring than bad, as such]
14: Daredevil [Late at night, drunk and sleepy, and this was STILL awful]
13: Tank Girl [aw, it wasn't good, but it wasn't bad
12: Fantastic Four [I loved this movie. Finestkind cheese wiz]
11: Sheena [Oh god, I'd almost managed to wipe that from my memory.... damn you!]
10: The Punisher [managed to miss that one]
9: Supergirl [ditto]
8: Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy [Yeah, a classic, and so on another list entirely, of Movies That Could Not Be Made Now, along with "Blazing Saddles"]
7: Howard the Duck [too many minutes of my life I'll never get back]
6: Steel [never saw it]
5: Swamp Thing [It could have been worse?]
4: Batman & Robin [I didn't even consider going to see it]
3: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen [I thougt it was fun, but then, i didn't know the source material prior]
2: Superman IV: The Quest for Peace [*gags*]
1: Judge Dredd [never saw it]

what scares me the most is how many of these I've seen....
From: [info]celticboy Date: March 29th, 2008 04:55 pm (UTC) (Link)
20: Ghost Rider - Own it. The majority of the movie is yawn inspiring, and in some places, cringe inducing, but the action stuff and the actual look of the Ghost Rider(s) was pretty good.
19: The Shadow - Not too bad. It's watchable in a way that Quest for peace isn't/
18: Barb Wire - This wasn't so much a movie as a chance to watch Pamela Anderson jiggle
17: Catwoman - I own this, and, Yes it was much worse than a lot of films on this list
16: Brenda Starr - Never heard of it
15: The Phantom Saw it once
14: Daredevil - Hmm, Radar vision effect=Good, Costume=Good, backstory = good, MCD as Kingpin = pretty good, Just a shame about Affleck.
13: Tank Girl - Saw this a very very long time ago
12: Fantastic Four Sequel was better.
11: Sheena - Never saw this
10: The Punisher - Compared to the Lundgren movie, it was good. It wasn't Spider-man good, but it was better than Catwoman! It should be a lot lower on this list
9: Supergirl - Suffered from spin-offitis. Helen Slater made a good Supergirl
8: Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy - A classic!
7: Howard the Duck - Saw this SO many times, mostly for the vision of Lea Thompson in a nightie..
6: Steel - Oh GOD
5: Swamp Thing - Ugh
4: Batman & Robin Saw it, and thought "Is this Neon-Man" Far too many faults.
3: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - It was ok, certainly more enjoyable than B&R
2: Superman IV: The Quest for Peace - At the time I thought "FINALLY Superman has a fight with someone with superpowers. Now I think UGH
1: Judge Dredd - Costumes, Props, Set design all good. Stallone was mostly OK as Dredd, except for the whole "Take off his helmet deal". Worst Moment? THE KISS UGH
kradical From: [info]kradical Date: March 29th, 2008 07:52 pm (UTC) (Link)
14: Daredevil - Hmm, Radar vision effect=Good, Costume=Good, backstory = good,

Oh, hell no. Backstory = very very much NOT good. Not even close. See my review for specifics, but they made a serious pig's ear of his backstory (and his frontstory, for that matter...).
amit From: [info]amit Date: March 29th, 2008 04:55 pm (UTC) (Link)
Man. Catwoman's WAY too low on that list.

I enjoyed Poison Ivy in Batman and Robin, but only because she was such a drag queen and she'd have been such a great fit for the 60's show.

They butchered Batgirl though. :(
thatwasjen From: [info]thatwasjen Date: March 29th, 2008 06:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
I love The Phantom. It had appropriate expectations of itself, and it didn't violate canon terribly. (And because I sometimes feel like the only fan of the comic under age 50, I was pretty happy to see that they even made the movie.)

I regret that Fantastic Four was pretty bad, but I enjoy watching Ioan Gruffudd do just about anything, so that made it worth my while.

Catwoman= way higher.

and WHY is the HULK movie not on this list? HUH? That piece of drek pissed me off six ways from Sunday, and...

...OK, I am a huge fangirl of the TV show. *blush*

The trailer for the remake looked good. And Ed Norton as Banner was a good choice, methinks. I just wonder how the script turned out...

"and WHY is the HULK movie not on this list? HUH? That piece of drek pissed me off six ways from Sunday"

Agreed!!

I refused to see that one on Principal, simply because it had Eric Banana in it (just because he's Australian, as I am, doesn't mean I have to like his Work)

Unfortunately, he seems to be in so many Movies now that I might otherwise like to see :-(

19) You can add me to the list of people who really liked The Shadow, which I think was somewhat ahead of its time. Looking at it now, the movie has something of a Buffyesque quality to its tone.

17) I think this movie would've been okay--not great, but okay--if they hadn't insisted on the character being Catwoman. Given that they changed everything else about her, they might as well have changed the name, too, and then, there wouldn't have been quite as much outrage.

14) I actually don't hate this movie, though I understand where you're coming from regarding changes to the character. Does the Director's Cut work any better for you? It's an almost completely different movie...

13) Kind of a weird adaptation, but I remember liking it. It's been a long time since I watched it, though.

7) I actually don't hate this one, either...but that might just be the attraction to Lea Thompson talking. ;)

4) This is still at the top of my Worst Movies list...and I've seen BloodRayne.

3) This is another movie that I think might've gotten a better reaction if it were tweaked some more and given a different title. Most of the people who had a problem with it didn't like its lack of faithfulness to the source material, which (as mentioned above) probably would've been next to impossible on film, anyway. I get the feeling Watchmen will eventually suffer from similar comparisons.

19: The Shadow - Dug it actually.
17: Catwoman - only 17?
15: The Phantom - Dug this one too
14: Daredevil - I like the R-rated director's cut actually......
12: Fantastic Four - not a fan but does not at all belong on this list
7: Howard the Duck - should be on the list but way down - this stunk but not for a lack of trying to be decent - up until then this was ILM's best SPFX work
6: Steel - I dug this actually I'm a sucker for anything Kenneth Johnson does
4: Batman & Robin - the ironic thing to me that, IMHO, Clooney make a great Batman but had nothing to help him. I'll hate this film mostly because they took the one of the best Bat villains ever created (Bane) and made him a mindless minion.
3: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - hated but not this much
2: Superman IV: The Quest for Peace - MY #1 by far
1: Judge Dredd - meh.
