ask away, ask away, ask away, onward....
Haven't done one of these in a while, and I feel the urge, so....

Ask me a question in the comments. It can be about anything you want. I reserve the right not to answer a question for reasons of my own, but in all the years I've done this, I don't think I've ever actually exercised that right.

So go on! Ask!

Current Mood: curious curious
Current Music: "Guitar Solo" by Jethro Tull (well, Martin Barré, really...)

Hi!

Asked by someone who's never played Resident Evil or seen more than a few minutes of the second film (Sienna... oh Sienna... *floats off to happy place*)

...anyway. Was there ever an in-game, in-movie, or in-novelization explanation given for why the hell it's called Raccoon City?
kradical From: kradical Date: April 21st, 2011 02:26 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm not aware of the reasons for the naming of the city (my guess would be it was originally settled in a place that had a lot of raccoons, or was settled by Fred Raccoon, or somesuch), but that wouldn't even crack the top ten of weird municipality names. Hell, most of the top ten would probably be occupied by places in Pennsylvania alone..............

Assuming that both were equally lucrative (or non-lucrative), and you could only do one for the rest of your life (but your financial needs were taken care of) would you choose writing or music?
kradical From: kradical Date: April 22nd, 2011 06:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
Oh, writing. I love to make music, but writing is my soul....

I seem to recall you complaining about Supernatural "Like a Virgin" because it has actual dragons, something you meant to put in Heart of the Dragon but weren't allowed to because the show would never go there. How different would the book have been had it had actual dragons?
kradical From: kradical Date: April 22nd, 2011 06:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
It wasn't really a complaint, more of a facepalm moment.....

Anyhow, the dragon would've had more of a physical presence (because aren't constrained by having the budget of a show on a second-tier network in its fifth season), and it would've been an actual dragon instead of a demon with the soul of a ronin that kept recurring.

The three-part structure would've been the same, though, and honestly I think the book works better by having Doragon Kokoro's backstory behind the monster.

(One of the things I like to do in Supernatural that the TV show isn't really equipped to do is actually do the POV of the monsters themselves. Adds a dimension, I think.....)

Literary - Has a series creator/ runner ever scolded you for going too far off-cannon?

kradical From: kradical Date: April 22nd, 2011 06:23 pm (UTC) (Link)
Honestly, the only series creator/runner I've ever even spoken to is Rockne S. O'Bannon for Farscape, and his first words to me when we met in 2001 (after he'd read House of Cards) were, "You get it!"

So, uh, no. *grin*

IKS Gorkon/Klingon Empire

KRAD, are we likely to see another of these marvelous books ever? Would Ed Schlesinger or whomever leads the pack be interested?

Re: IKS Gorkon/Klingon Empire

Or, to expand this question further, will we be seeing any new Trek novels from you? Because your stories always rock!

Question~

Hi~

Since I can't stop thinking about it, I thought I would tell you about it again, even though I don't want to seem like I ask too much ! But yeah... I'm still thinking a lot about Ramiel (and Tyler), I'd like to know more, maybe be able to draw him (because I love to draw~ )... if you have the time, or feel like telling me more, or give me some clues how I should draw him, that would mean the world to me~ ! I'm trying since so long, since the first time I've read Heart of the Dragon ! But having informations from you would be awesome, really, awesome~ !

Thank you~ !

(I'm sorry for my english...)

Re: Question~

Tyler Magowan is basically your ordinary schmoe. *laughs* He's average height, average weight, brown hair, brown eyes, slightly balding, a little pudgy. He's somebody where, if you passed him on the street, you'd be hard-pressed to recall what he looked like even after you just saw him.

Harmless, really. Until Ramiel possessed him, at which point he became "mostly harmless." *grin*

Hope that helps!

What do YOU think 1 plus 1 equals?

1+1 = WIN (Wait: you mean Charlie Sheen hasn't remade math in his mind?)

A Question...

If you could change one significant element about canonical Trek (i.e. the stuff you can't mess around with if you want your Trek story published), what would it be?
kradical From: kradical Date: April 22nd, 2011 06:29 pm (UTC) (Link)

Re: A Question...

Last time I got this question, my answer was "the end of 'Sons of Mogh'," but considering how much mileage I got in six novels out of that ending, I'm not sure I still think that. *laughs*

I know -- I'd have established in First Contact that Riker had his own command already, with La Forge and Troi on the Titan (or whatever) with him. Have those three as well as Worf taken on board as refugees when their ships are blasted to pieces by the Borg, and then they all go back in time.

Insurrection's plot doesn't change all that much -- you just have two ships instead of one. Nemesis does change, but it rather desperately needed it. *wry grin*

This would have the benefit of showing that the characters have moved on with their careers while still justifying getting them all together for a movie.

Never heard of it. S&S's web site lists the author as "unknown," and obviously Amazon got confused. *laughs*

Star Trek

Dude...when are you going to do another Trek novel? I know they've cut back the line and that there's been some major and ongoing editorial issues, but given how involved you used to be, I can't believe you can't come up with SOMETHING that pleases the powers that be enough to get them to add a title for you to the line! I used to be unable to wait for your next book, given the love and detail you put into them. That devotion has now switched to Mack and Bennett, but I still MISS YOU!

SO... inquiring minds want to know...when are you writing more Trek?????

Love, a devoted but frustrated Fan!!

Re: Star Trek

Appreciate the kudos, truly, but no Trek work is currently on the docket. Trust me, if that changes, I will not keep it a secret. *grin*

All that it would -- IF IT COULD. Which it can't. Just like the Pacific can't drain.

Ae you going to the Trek Expo in Tulsa this year?

Do you think Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda could have gone on longer or do you think it should not have been made at all with the cast?
kradical From: kradical Date: April 22nd, 2011 06:32 pm (UTC) (Link)
Afraid not.

I honestly think it went one year too long, as the final season made nothing like sense......

when you write comic books is it like writing a movie script? and are you give a general idea or plot to work from or can you more or less do whatever?
kradical From: kradical Date: April 22nd, 2011 06:42 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's vaguely similar to a movie script, but not really, because you're describing action in a manner wholly different from the way you'd describe it in a movie. You're describing moments being portrayed in sequence, rather than a flow of action, as it were.

Comics also don't have a set format the way teleplays and screenplays do.....

Just realized I never answered this....

I have a car because wrenn had a car when she moved up from Delaware and she refused to give it up. Luckily, parking isn't that bad in our area, and it's proven a godsend on any number of occasions. (For one thing, the part-time job I'm working is much easier to get to by car, as it's a 20-minute drive versus a 90-minute bus trip.....)

Have you ever gotten in trouble because of something you've blogged? I was thinking about starting a blog, myself, but I've hesitated because of my workplaces...

A lot of the Yankees "scrap-heap" newcomers have been impressive so far. Which one has impressed you the most, and which one(s) do you think have the best chance to continue his succsess going forward this year?

Thanks,
Mike S.
kradical From: kradical Date: April 24th, 2011 05:44 pm (UTC) (Link)
The one that's impressed me the most is Bartolo Colon, simply because he has so overwhelmingly exceeded expectations -- not difficult, since my expectations were for him to wash out in spring training.

The one I think will still be a useful part come August is Eric Chavez. I don't think Colon will hold up over a whole season, and I think that being a part-time player is the best way to maximize Chavez's talents while minimizing his tremendous injury risk.

What are the odds of you doing another Warcraft or Starcraft novel? I loved "Nova," and "Cycle of Hatred" was also pretty good.
kradical From: kradical Date: April 24th, 2011 05:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
Pretty slim at the moment, sorry to say. However, if you want more Blizzardy goodness from me, I also scripted issue #1 of the StarCraft: Ghost Academy manga from TokyoPop.
