A few days ago, Ann Crispin (who wrote as A.C. Crispin) posted on her Facebook page that she was losing her battle with cancer. This morning, she lost the battle.
I last saw Ann at Shore Leave, where she and I were on a panel with Christopher Bennett, Joy Wynick, and Peter David on the differences between writing tie-ins and original novels. She was in bad shape then, and I knew we weren't going to have her for long.
Ann has been a good friend for a long time, and she did an amazing amount of good for the writing community with the Writer Beware aspect of SFWA
, as well as the Emergency Medical Fund, with which I've assisted in the past. We never actually worked together, though we both toiled in the tie-in mines for years, including both of us doing Star Trek
at various times. Her novels Yesterday's Son
were particularly excellent examples of the breed -- ditto her Han Solo trilogy of Star Wars
Fuck cancer. *sigh* Rest in peace, my friend.
