Looooooooooooong weekend. But a good one.
Friday, I taught the kids sparring class, which is more or less my responsibility until the black belt who usually teaches it recovers from knee-replacement surgery. Then dinner with my parents, as we usually do on Fridays when we're home. Saturday was an all-day celebration of the 20th anniversary of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
, hosted by the USS Justice fan club
at the Morris County Library in Whippany, New Jersey. I missed the first two episodes that were screened, "Children of Time" and "Trials and Tribble-ations," but I was there for the trivia contest, my own one-hour talk (during which I read from The Klingon Art of War
), and the screenings of "The Visitor" and "Little Green Men." I also sold bunches of books, which always makes me happy. :)
Wrenn and I weren't able to join the gang for dinner, because Saturday night was our dojo's 21st anniversary party, and I wasn't about to miss that. There was fun and food and drink and a nifty-keen slideshow that dealt with what the dojo had accomplished over the past year, including my own nidan
promotion this past March.
We had to bug out around 9.30, though, as we had to drive out to Stroudsberg, Pennsylvania. We crashed for the night at the lovely home of fellow writer Michael A. Ventrella
and his wife the lovely artist Heidi Hooper
, along with Bernie Mojzses and the husband-wife team of Danielle Ackley-McPhail and Mike McPhail. The following morning, me, Wrenn, Dani, Bernie, and the two Mikes hied to the East Monroe Public Library, where we were joined by Kathryn Craft to teach an all-day writers workshop, covering a huge range of topics for about 25 attendees. It went very
well, and it looks promising that this will become an annual thing.
Tonight, we drove home, ordered Chinese, and vegged out in front the TV (holy crap, are we behind on the DVR). I also got to do some revisions on "Fish Out of Water" thanks to the mighty Myke Cole
, who corrected my Coast Guard fuckups. Still waiting on the other three folks who owe me feedback............
Meanwhile, I'm still taking questions in this post
so please feel free to ask me stuff. This week, besides getting the short story out the door, I'll be starting on a movie novelization, and also entertaining an old friend I haven't seen in 20 years, who's visiting for the week.
