I've never been much into April Fool's Day. I was always the kid who got pranked growing up, not the one who played the prank, so my taste for such things was never all that high. The only prank I can recall being actively involved in was when Marco Palmieri was one of the Star Trek
editors and a bunch of us who were regularly writing Trek
fiction banded together to send him a whole bunch of joke proposals on the 1st of April (okay, they were all porn....). That was fun. We also did a few bits of silliness on the Trek BBS.
But then in 2007, the first of April came only five days after one of my dearest friends died of a heart attack at the age of 48
, and that drained what little sense of prankishness I had out of me.
I will say that today is a good day to treat everything you read online with an even healthier dose of skepticism than you normally treat what you read online.
(Having said that, this post is totally serious.)
