Then I was off to a local school, where I've been teaching an afterschool karate program. This is one of two programs our dojo does at local grammar schools, and it's one I took over in April when the black belt who was teaching it was unable to continue.
There are two groups I'm teaching, five- and six-year-olds, and seven- and eight-year-olds. The first group is bigger, but all of them did very well. One kid, who's spent most of the time fooling around (and has been the only serious problem in the big-kids class), did much better today, but still screwed up several things. While most of the kids in his group got promoted to blue belt he and one other girl (who has trouble with right and left) only got promoted to advanced white belt. The boy was despondent and crying afterward, but this kid also was constantly misbehaving in class. I really hope this served as a wake-up call to him. We'll see in September, I guess.....
I gotta say, though, I'm really proud of how the kids did. They've only been my students for a few weeks, but they're still my students. They done good, and I look forward to working with them more in the fall.
After the promotion, I headed downtown to Keens Steakhouse for my mother's 67th birthday dinner. It was, as always, magnificent. Wrenn and I shared our usual porterhouse steak for two, which is only for as few as two if the two have been starved for two weeks. I also had oysters for an appetizer, and a hot fudge sundae and cappuccino for dessert.
Came home to update DeCandido.net with stuff on the Sleepy Hollow novel, and other things, and also digest the copious amounts of food. Tomorrow is a fun day in the city, and Sunday is a kids tournament at our dojo. Sunday night, I will finally start writing the Kickstarter story (better late than never!), and in addition to that I need to spend June writing the Stargate story and a Cassie story for Without a License (which also needs me to do a revision on "Partners in Crime," the Dragon Precinct story rejected for Sword and Sorceress).
Busy busy busy....
What do y'all have planned for your weekend?
