midweek music: "Coming Into Los Angeles"
Back in 2009, an album called A Song for My Father was released, in which various people sang songs written by their fathers -- Jen Chapin singing "Cat's in the Cradle," Ky-Mani Marley singing "Soul Shake Down Party," and so on -- and the final song on the album is a magnificently haunting rendition of "Coming Into Los Angeles" by Sarah Lee Guthrie. Her father Arlo's is one of my favorite song, but her cover is superlative as well. Unlike most of the covers on the album, she truly reinterpreted it, and it's amazing.
