Tim Hildebrandt, RIP
Tim Hildebrandt has died, of complications from diabetes, at age 67. Tim and his brother Greg are best known for their illustrations of J.R.R. Tolkien's work, much of which came back into print in recent years for obvious reasons. They're responsible for a lot of how people view the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings characters, and they definitely influenced Peter Jackson in how he made his film adaptaions look.

I got to work with Tim and Greg on some book covers back in my Byron Preiss days. They were consummate pros, very easy to work with. I also met Tim when we did The Chronic Rift back in the early 1990s.

Tim will be deeply missed..

Current Mood: sad

That sucks. We got to meet him at a private party for his son's ex-fiance's birthday.

He'll be missed.

Actually, the party was for Rachel Silber's 30th birthday, and Tim was in town visiting J&C. It was summer of '99, and we talked about the Episode I poster.

More proof I'm getting old. The second thing to go is the memory. I can't recall the first.

OK, so it was Rachel's party and the son and ex-fiance were invited and dragged dad along.

I got confused because the party was in VA, but Rachel lives in MD.

Indeed. His amazing talent will forever be remembered and his loss keenly felt. His was the first "fantasy" artwork that I connected to on a sensual level. I could almost feel myself transported into the worlds that he and Greg created. Rest in Peace, sir.

That is too bad... I've got an old battered copy of Urshurak around here somewhere, I'll have to re-read it soon.
