First of all, thanks!
Okay, a crash course in how tie-in fiction works: The licensor, who is the owner of the property (in the case of Buffy, it's the 20th Century Fox Film Corporation; with Star Wars, it's LucasFilm; with Star Trek, it's CBS/Paramount; with Serenity, it's NBC/Universal) sells the rights to do tie-in novels to a publishing company. That publishing company then hires writers (like me) to write the novels. We have to go through an approvals process, but we don't generally work directly with the producers. Even in those instances where the producer has approval (which Joss does with Serenity, but doesn't with Buffy), we don't work straight with that person, we work with our editor, our editor works with a licensing person at the studio, and the licensing person works with the producer.
Regarding Serenity in particular, Pocket Books bought the rights to do three books. One was my novelization; the other two were to be two original novels that picked up from the movie. Back in May 2005, Pocket solicited a bunch of established authors (I was one of them; Jamie Chambers & Margaret Weis, who wrote the RPG, did one; at least three people on my friends list wrote proposals as well) to write proposals. In June 2005, they were sent to Universal, who sent them to Joss.
Fifteen months later, they're still sitting on Joss's desk.
So if there are novels that take place after the movie (which is looking exceedingly unlikely), they will be produced by Pocket Books, because they're the ones with the rights to it.
As for Buffy -- I have to ask, are you a published fiction author?

No, but I'm on my way. I'm working with Janrae Frank on her Moonstone of Reyanon Series. I'm also writing some stuff on the side for her. So... publishing is forthcoming... I just can't say when. -...sigh- It's a life dream of mine that I MUST DO before I die: Work For, Write For, or MEET Joss Whedon.
