Edgar Allan Poe's first short story, "Metzengerstein," was published (1832)

HURRICANES &c.

According to NOAA, hurricane is a regional name for a strong "tropical cyclone," defined as a "nonfrontal synoptic scale low-pressure system over tropical or subtropical waters with organized convection (i.e., thunderstorms) and definite cyclonic surface wind circulation." Tropical cyclones with wind speeds <38mph are technically "tropical depressions"; those with wind speeds 39-73mph are "tropical storms." Those with wind speeds >74mph are named depending on the ocean they hit: "hurricane" in the N Atlantic, NE Pacific, or S Pacific; "typhoon" in the NW Pacific; "severe tropical cyclone" in the SW Pacific or SE Indian; "severe cyclonic storm" in the N Indian; and "tropical cyclone" in the SW Indian.

Men's natures are alike; it is their habits that carry them far apart.
