The Library of Congress established its Living Legend award in 2000. Noted artists, writers, activists, filmmakers, doctors, entertainers, athletes, and public servants are selected by Library of Congress curators and specialists for their "significant contributions to America's diverse cultural, scientific, and social heritage."
