US NATIONAL MARCH

John Philip Sousa's 1896 composition "The Stars and Stripes Forever!" (noted for its elaborate piccolo part) is the US National March. Sousa declared that "march music is for the feete, not for the head" and that "a march speaks to a fundamental rhythm in the human organization and is answered. A march stimulates every center of vitality, wakens the imagination." (It was falsely suggested that the composer fabricated his surname so that it would include the letters USA.)

Work is the grand cure of all the maladies and miseries that ever beset mankind.
Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881)
