RED CROSS, CRESCENT, & CRYSTAL
On June 22, 2006, the 29th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (ICRC) amended its statutes to incorporate the "Red Crystal" emblem and afford it the same status as the Red Cross and Red Crescent. The significance of this decision went beyond graphic design, since it allowed Israel to join the Red Cross movement (despite objections from some Muslim countries). Israel's equivalent to the Red Cross, the Magen David Adom, had previously had only "observer status," since its logo, a red Star of David, was not accepted under the Geneva Conventions.
