Schott's Miscellany 22 April 2009

The first steamship to cross the Atlantic nonstop arrived in New York after 18 days and 10 hours (1838)

According to the Greek "father of medicine," Hippocrates (c.460-c.375 BCE), thoese are the 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 16th, 18th, etc., days of a disease, when no "crisis" will occur and medicine may be safely administered. Similarly, medicinal hours are those suitable for taking medicine: apparently, an hour before dinner, four hours after dinner, and bedtime.

Children have never been very good as listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.
James Baldwin (1924-87)
