Names after Maia, the goddess of growth, May is considered a joyous month, as Milton wrote: "Hail bounteous May that dost inspire Mirth and youth, and warm desire."

However, may has long been thought a bad month in which to marry: Who weds in May throws it all away.

Anglo-Saxons called May thrimilce, since in May cows could be milked three times a day.

May was thought a time of danger for the sick; so to have climbedMay hill was to have survived the month.

Kittens born in May were thought weak and were often drowned.

I do want to get rich but I never want to do what therer is to do to get rich.
Gertrude Stein (1874-1946)
