Spencer Perceval, the first and only British Prime Minister to be assassinated, died (1812)

"If a mustache is worn, it is to be trimmed and not below the line of the lower lip. Beards and whiskers are only to be worn with authority, which will usually be granted only on medical or religious grounds, or where tradition permits. The appearance of the beard and whiskers is to be neat and tidy."

[Queen's Regulations, 1975]

VERTICORDIOUS--turning the heart
"Ishbel found the poem unbearably verticordious."

You've this curious fixation on mustaches lately.. is yours waking you up at night and making you commit crimes? (You get a no-prize if you get the reference...)

All I can say about mustaches is once my boss was having a talk about military history with a co-worker while I was in the room, and my boss commented first that Saddam Hussein was like Hitler, then changed his mind and said he was more like Stalin. He then said "What was it with those guys?"

And it came to me unbidden: "They all had mustaches."

Make of that what you will.

It's not my kick, it's the page-a-day calendar that these bits come from.

The British military is more forgiving than Disney, which bans facial hair, despite Walt's own mustache.
