Father's Day

Written c.1812 by English composer James Sanderson, "Hail to the Chief" was performed for a number of presidents before being used at James Polk's inauguration in 1845. In 1954, the Department of Defense made it the president's official musical tribute.

Hail to the Chief we have chosen for the nation,
Hail to the Chief! We salute him, one and all.
Hail to the Chief, as we pledge cooperation
In proud fulfilment of a great, noble call.
Yours is the aim to make this grand country grander,
This you will do, That's our strong, firm belief.
Hail to the one we selected as commander,
Hail to the President! Hail to the Chief!

Opera in English is, in the main, just about as sensible as baseball in Italian.

H.L. Mencken (1880-1956)
