Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormons, was murdered in prison (1844)

The America's Cup yacht race is considered the oldest contested trophy in sports history. The first race was staged in 1851 when the America (owned by the New York Yacht Club) triumphed over 14 British boats (representing the Royal Yacht Squadron) in a race around the Isle of Wight. The original trophy was donated to the New York Yacht Club under a Deed of Gift, which stated that it must remain a "perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations." Nowadays, the Cup (known affectionately as the "Auld Mug") is contested by its current holder and the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup. By tradition, each race is hosted by the Cup's previous victor. (Famously, when Queen Victoria inquired which yacht had been runner-up, she was told: "Your Majesty, there is no second.")

Official dignity tends to increase in inverse ratio to the importance of the country in which the office is held.
Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)
