Schott's Miscellany 1 July 2009

Canada Day (Canada)

JULY

July was originally called Quintilis (from Quintus, meaning "fifth"), but it was renamed by Mark Antony to honor the murdered Julius Caesar, who was born on July 12.

A swarm of bees in May is worth a load of Hay; / A swarm of bees in June is worth a silver spoon; / But a swarm of bees in July is not worth a fly.

If the first of July be rainy weather, / 'Twill ruin mair or less for forty days together.

Bow-wow dandy fly--Brew no beer in July.

July used to be known as the thunder month, and some churches rang their bells in the hope of driving away thunder and lightning.

The meek shall inherit the earth, but not the mineral rights.
