PYRRHIC VICTORY

A PYRRHIC VICTORY is one achieved at such a cost that it is almost indistinguishable from defeat. It seems the term derives from the bellicose antics of Pyrrhus (319-272 BCE), King of Epirus, who twice beat the Roman army but with casualties so crippling that one commentator wrote, "One more such victory and we are lost."

Man is the only animal that blushes. Or needs to.
Mark Twain (1835-1910)
