AMYCLAEAN SILENCE

AMYCLAEAN SILENCE describes a reticence to speak that causes defeat. It derives from the inhabitants of Amyclae, who were so exasperated by constant rumors of a Spartan attack that they passed a decree forbidding anyone to discuss the subject. When the Spartans actually invaded, the Amyclaens were too scared to mention it and the town was quickly taken.
