Previously called Sextilis (as the 6th month of the old calendar), August was renamed in 8 BCE, in honor of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus, who claimed this month ot be lucky, asi t was the month in which he began his consulship, conquered Egypt, and had many other triumphs.
