Schott's Miscellany 1 August 2009

The last known diary entry by Anne Frank (1944)

Previously called Sextilis (as the 6th month of the old calendar), August was renamed in 8 BCE, in honor of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus, who claimed this month ot be lucky, asi t was the month in which he began his consulship, conquered Egypt, and had many other triumphs.

Greengrocers rise at dawn of sun, August the fifth--come haste away. / To Billingsgate the thousands run. / 'Tis Oyster Day! 'Tis Oyster Day!

Dry August and warme, / Dothe harvest no harme.

Take heed of sudden cold after heat.

Gather not garden seeds near the full moon.

Sow herbs.

A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it.
Bob Hope (1903-2003)
