UNLUCKY DAYS

The 1864 edition of The Book of Days: A Miscellany of Popular Antiquities by R. Chambers includes an entry on evil or unlucky days, also called "Egyptian days" or dies mala. January 3, July 1, October 2, April 30, August 1, and December 31 were among the most dangerous--drinking was to be avoided, and children born on these days were thought likely to die "a wicked death." The Book of Days also notes the following "perilous days," according to a "Kalendar" from the time of Henry VI:

January: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 15
February: 6, 7, 18
March: 1, 6, 8
April: 6, 11
May: 5, 6, 7
June: 7, 15
July: 5, 19
August: 15, 19
September: 6, 7
October: 6
November: 15, 16
December: 15, 16, 17
