POLITICAL DOVES, HAWKS, GOATS, & DUCKS
The DOVE has long been associated with goodness, but of three different types: the dove of Noah symbolizes rest; the dove of David, peace; and the dove of Christ, salvation. In contrast, from teh earliest days of falconry, the HAWK has symbolized war. (A CHICKENHAWK is one who advocates war despite never having had personal military experience.)
The SCAPEGOAT, so often discussed in politics, dates to Jewish ritual (Lev. xvi) and the Day of Atonement, when one of two goats was chosen to be sent into the wilderness (the sins of the people having been symbolically laid upon it), while the other was sacrificed.
LAME DUCK was originally a London stock market term for one who defaulted on a debt. It is now used to describe a discredited politician or a president in (roughly) the second half of the second term of office.
Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)
