conga-rats to the Nebula winners!

The Nebula Awards were given yesterday. Congrats to Michael Chabon, my old buddy Nancy Kress, Ted Chiang, Karen Joy Fowler, Guillermo del Toro, J.K. Rowling, Michael Moorcock, Melisa Michaels, Graham P. Collins, and Ardath Mayhar.

Also congrats to another old buddy, Sarah Beth Durst, who was nominated for the Andre Norton Award for YA SF for her debut novel Into the Wild, but had the misfortune to have it come out in the same eligibility period as the last Harry Potter book. *wry grin* I first met Sarah ten years ago when José R. Nieto, Christopher Golden, Craig Shaw Gardner, and I were doing a signing at Pandemonium Books and Games in the Boston area (we all had had Marvel Comics based books out recently and were pushing them). Sarah was an aspiring author who wanted to pick our brains, and we were stuck behind the desk anyhow, so we let ourselves be picked. (It helped that Sarah was polite and asked good questions, and is also one of the sweetest humans ever.)

We've stayed in touch over the years (among other things, she was hugely helpful with helping me develop the al'Hmatti in my Trek novel Diplomatic Implausibility), and I can't tell you how thrilled I am that she not only got published (and the sequel Out of the Wild is due any day now), but got a major award nomination on top of that.
