Down These Mean Streets review

Jens Deffner (defcons_treklit) has reviewed my 2005 Spider-Man novel Down These Mean Streets for Unreality SF.

Money quote:

The characterisation is always one of Keith R.A. DeCandido's strengths, but he was especially good in this area here. Not only Peter Parker/Spider-Man is portrayed very well, but every character has enough depth to make them more than just bystanders. That's especially true for the “costume”-hating cops, it would have been easy for the author to just make them the usual one-dimensional superhero-hating characters, but there reasoning actually makes a certain sense, and actually makes you see their point to some degree. But really every character has a something making the reader interested in them, be it Hector Diaz, Javier's mother or really almost every character having more than a cameo.

fun with houseguests

Right after I posted that last post, we realized we were at the wrong terminal. Silly me, I figured a Delta flight would land at the Delta terminal. Not so much, as it was a New York-Chicago shuttle, so it was at the Marine Terminal. Sigh.

But we got booraven22 and brpellis, and we came home (with a stop at Dunkin Donuts along the way), and we hung out (with suricattus joining us for part of it) gabbing and having fun and later eating pizza and drinking wine, and eventually watching National Treasure 2. A wonderful time was had by all.

Today, we're gonna go see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in Times Square, then heading back up to the Bronx to have a huge dinner in Little Italy with the whole famn damily.

Now we're just waiting for the coffee to be ready...............

a good day

Another fun day today. suricattus, terri_osborne, brpellis, and booraven22 went into Times Square, did some shopping (Terri bought a remote-controlled Wall-E from the upcoming Pixar film, and she got me a Chien-Ming Wang action figure), had some lunch, then saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which was a lot of fun. Not as good as Raiders or Last Crusade, much better than Temple of Doom, and generally nifty and keen.

Then home and we all went off to Mario's on Arthur Avenue in Little Italy, joined by all four parents (girasole, helgabee, bronxbob350, and the Infomancer), my aunt, and my cousin. We had a fantastic dinner, which was big and delicious and moderately cheap. Then we came back home and had some homemade ice cream at my cousin's (she lives on the first floor of our building). Now we're watching Jeff Dunham on DVD and we're stuffed.

We had an absolutely wonderful time.

Today has been really really good. It's the best day I've had in a very long time.
