Simpsons KRAD

not as young as I used to be

Back in college, popfiend and I went to the Ritz, which still existed back then, to see the Coasters, the Drifters, and Martha and the Vandellas. We had to stand through all three acts, as the Ritz didn't have seating, but we were just under 20 and having a good time, and we did just fine, having a grand old time, and then taking the subway back to my house and then driving Orenthal home.

Tonight, terri_osborne and I went to the Fillmore at Irving Plaza, which has the same layout as the Ritz did back in the day, and saw Extreme, King's X, and the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp finals, a group of insta-bands made up of amateurs who spent a day rehearsing with a professional musician and who then came out and did two or three songs. The RnRFC stuff was mostly dreadful, but King's X and Extreme were both FANTASTIC. I got a Living Colour vibe off of King's X, along with another Black Rock Coalition band from the 1980s that none of you have ever heard of called PBR Street Gang. And Extreme just kicked ass. I'm glad they got back together, because apart, they don't work. Nuno Bettencourt is an integral part of the band's musical sound, so Extreme didn't work without him, but Nuno has, like, no charisma and sucks as a solo performer, and he needs the rest of the band. Honestly, Gary Cherone and Nuno have the same symbiotic relationship of a lot of other lead singers and guitarists (Jagger/Richards, Anderson/Barre, Tyler/Perry) where they work so much better together than apart.

But we were basically on our feet for eight straight hours -- on line outside from 4-5.35, and then inside from 5.35 until midnight when the Extreme show ended. We found a good spot on the second level, leaning on a railing (which beat the shit out of being on the floor in the teeming mass of humanity), but my feet and neck are just killing me.

I ain't 19 no mo'. *laughs* But damn, was the show worth it. Great great fun.
