next year's page-a-day

Part of the solstice loot last night was next year's page-a-day calendar, a present from girasole: the Schott's Miscellany Calendar. Basically, it'll be a new bizarre fact (or set of facts) every day. And when I say every day, I mean every day: unlike every other page-a-day I've ever owned, there's a new fact every day, including both days of the weekend!

(For more on Ben Schott, the man behind this calendar and the various Schott's Miscellany books, check out the man's web site.)

Harold Pinter, RIP

Harold Pinter, one of the finest playwrights of recent times, has died at the age of 78, finally succumbing to cancer.

My favorite play of his was Betrayal, a story that was, in essence, told backwards. It was also made into a fine movie in 1983 with Jeremy Irons, Ben Kingsley, and Patricia Hodge as the three members of the love triangle.

Rest in peace, good sir.
