In the 19th century, an elaborate taxonomy developed regarding how visiting (or calling) cards should be left, folded, and inscribed, when those of "quality" paid social calls:

Nature of call	style of fold
Visit	right-hand upper corner folded down
Felicitation	left-hand upper corner folded down
Condolence	left-hand lower corner folded up
PPC, PDA *	right-hand lower corner folded up
Made on all members of a family	the lady's card folded in the middle
Delivered in person	right-hand side folded in

* PPC, pour prendre congé (although many assumed the initials to stand for "presents parting compliments"), or PDA, pour dire adieu.
