THEMATIC CATALOGUES

The work of some of composers, especially those prolific in the 18-19th centuries has been organized and catalogued--often by a dedicated scholar--to aid the identification of each piece. For example, Mozart's work was ordered by the Austrian naturalist Ludwig von Köchel (1800-77) who gave each piece a number prefixed with his initial, K. So, Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (1787) is generally referred to as K. 525. Some other thematic catalogues include:
