how I sold my first short story
In this open-thread post,
jlsigman asked me to tell the story of how I sold my first short story, "An Evening in the Bronx with Venom," a story I wrote in collaboration with John Gregory Betancourt for the 1994 anthology The Ultimate Spider-Man.

POLITICAL DOVES, HAWKS, GOATS, & DUCKS
The DOVE has long been associated with goodness, but of three different types: the dove of Noah symbolizes rest; the dove of David, peace; and the dove of Christ, salvation. In contrast, from teh earliest days of falconry, the HAWK has symbolized war. (A CHICKENHAWK is one who advocates war despite never having had personal military experience.)
The SCAPEGOAT, so often discussed in politics, dates to Jewish ritual (Lev. xvi) and the Day of Atonement, when one of two goats was chosen to be sent into the wilderness (the sins of the people having been symbolically laid upon it), while the other was sacrificed.
LAME DUCK was originally a London stock market term for one who defaulted on a debt. It is now used to describe a discredited politician or a president in (roughly) the second half of the second term of office.

Mary Travers, the third part of Peter, Paul, and Mary, has died at the age of 72, having lost her battle with leukemia.
A big part of my childhood is now gone. *sigh* Rest in peace, great lady.....

I'm enjoying the 20 minutes of free wifi that Boingo offers to folks as long as they sit through an ad. Sitting here waiting for the plane to board and listening to the iPod. Amusingly, the gods of shuffle provided me with entertainment, going from Bob Dylan's "Solid Rock" to Dire Straits's "Solid Rock." The two songs share little in common beyond title and generally heavy guitar work, but it amused me.
Debated checking luggage right up until the part where they said I'd have to pay $15, at which point I figured I'd be okay carrying my overnight bag (which fits fine in the overhead compartments, but which is also filled with books I want to sell this weekend). Not that I can't afford the $15, but it's the principle of the thing. If I had a bag that didn't fit in the overhead, I'd have to pay the $15. What if I didn't have it? What would happen then? It's a despicable practice, and one I'm not eager to contribute to.
Looking forward to FenCon!
