stuff what I've been readin': Flesh and Fire by Laura Anne Gilman

Caveat #1: Laura Anne Gilman (a.k.a. suricattus) is a very close friend of mine. How-some-ever, this review is totally honest. If I didn't like the book, I just wouldn't say anything about it.

Caveat #2: For any government official reading this, I actually purchased my copy of this book at an actual bookstore with my own money, so no publisher tried to bribe me into writing a review.

Flesh and Fire is the first book of "The Vineart War," and it sucked me right on in and didn't let go until I got to the end. One advantage to being friends with the author is that I could go right to her apartment and tell her in person to hurry up and finish Book 2... *laughs*

This is a fine book, a unique book in a genre that doesn't always reward ingenuity, and you should definitely check it out. You can find the book in the SF/F section, probably with the new hardcover releases.

the worst major SF films of the decade

John Scalzi lists the worst major science fiction movies of the past decade. The criteria to make John's hall of shame are:
1. Released between January 1, 2000 and right this very second;
2. Released to theaters in the U.S. (i.e., no straight-to-video or TV dreck);
3. One of the top 100 money grossers of its year. This last criterion, incidentally, disqualifies the entire Uwe Boll canon, for which I think we are all grateful.

My only issue with his list is that The Matrix sequels didn't make the cut (the original, like The Phantom Menace, missed the cut by one year (and yes, I think The Matrix should make such a list, easily (I say why here (stop me before I nest another parenthetical!!!!)))).

Here's the back-cover copy:
Twenty-seven years ago, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. In the years after, their father, John, taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America... and he taught them how to kill it.

When renegade angel Castiel alerts Sam and Dean to a series of particularly brutal killings in San Francisco's Chinatown, they realize the Heart of the Dragon is back. John Winchester faced the terrifying spirit 20 years ago, and the Campbell family fought it 40 years ago--can the boys succeed where their parents and grandparents failed?

A brand-new Supernatural novel that reveals a previously unseen adventure for the Winchester brothers, from the hit CW series!

Thursday in the park with Keith

Came into Manhattan to meet up with the Godmommy, who got me a pair of jeans for Christmas (I needed to go with her, as I wasn't 100% sure if my jeans size was the same as it was when last I purchased such things, as my belly has altered in size somewhat the past few years), and also to go to the PO box.

This morning, the UPS folks delivered the page proofs for "The Unhappy Ones," the "wrath" novella in the upcoming Star Trek: Seven Deadly Sins anthology. I starting proofing the pages on the train ride down and finished 'em while eating lunch. Now I'm sitting in Bryant Park, using their free wireless and writing up the corrections in an e-mail that I will e-mail to La Editor, then hop on the express bus home.

I love living in the modern world sometimes. Okay, all the time....
