ghost academy

Ghost Academy Volume 1 in hand!

I have, in my hot little hands (well, not this second, as I'm typing this), two hot-off-the-presses copies of StarCraft: Ghost Academy Volume 1, a new manga from TokyoPop written by me with art by Fernando Heinz Furukawa.

I am well pleased.

The book will be available on 29 December. You can see a preview at TokyoPop's web site and watch this incredibly cool trailer:

why iPods are good things....

I was in a local pizza place having lunch, and they were piping in the worst Christmas music ever. Well, maybe not the whole time, but while I was ordering, they were playing the most atrocious version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" -- an already-hard-to-take song -- imaginable. Couldn't get my earbuds back in fast enough.....

Nicky may be coming home

George A. King III of the New York Post is reporting that the Yankees and Nick Johnson are close to a one-year deal.

Nicky was a Yankee farmhand, and he was my second-favorite Yankee when he was on the team (after Jorge Posada). An on-base machine -- Baseball Prospectus once referred to him as "OBP Jesus" -- he would be a perfect fit for the Yanks, who have a hole at DH with Hideki Matsui's departure for Anaheim.

I always hated the trade that sent Nicky, Juan Rivera, and Randy Choate to the Expos for Javier Vazquez after the 2003 season. Because they didn't win the World Series either year, the 2002 and 2003 teams don't get the credit they deserve, but those were two of the best teams of the Joe Torre era, and Nicky was a big part of both of them. And in 2004, when Jason Giambi went down with intestinal parasites for much of the season, forcing the Yanks to use the dessicated remains of Tony Clark and John Olerud at first, Nicky's absence was keenly felt -- and Vazquez was never all that in a Yankee uniform.

Putting his guaranteed .400-plus OBP between Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira will make the top of the Yanks' order at least as much of a force to be reckoned with as it was with Johnny Damon in the #2 hole.

I really hope this deal happens.

HG World

HG World Season 0 Episode 6 Part 1: "And Shadows Still Remain"

As Season 0 of the audio drama HG World barrels to a conclusion, 3015 North Studios is presenting the final three parts of the season in the final three weeks of the year, starting last week with the fifth episode, "All the Greenery is Comin' Down, Boy." The sixth episode, "And Shadows Still Remain," went live tonight, with the season finale, "It's a World of Dread and Fear," hitting on Christmas Day. (Then, of course, Season 1 starts in January 2010......)

After receiving strange orders from superiors to keep away from HG World, McInnes and Grant turn their attention to the Happy Valley Militia, a quasi-military government reaching out from north-central Pennsylvania to control large sections of the state. As the public begins turning to these groups for help in the absence of a central government, rumors circulate of the mysterious "Generals" and their carnival-styled camps popping up in the western part of the state. Inside and under cover, Grant and McInnes find every kind of excess imaginable. Everything is for sale or trade. But what's beneath the surface?
