Stupid History 30 April - 2 May 2010

Humphrey Bogart never said the line, "Play it again, Sam." In the 1943 movie Casablanca, Ingrid Bergman's character, Ilse, is the one who implores Sam (Dooley Wilson) to "play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By.'" So no one ever says, "Play it again, Sam," and in fact, Sam never plays "As Time Goes By," he just sings it--Wilson couldn't [play the piano and the accompaniment was dubbed over later.

During the Battle of Chancellorsville, on the night of May 2, 1863, Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson took a small group of men to uncover a possible weakness in the Union's position. When he returned, he wasn't greeted by a hail of cheers but by a hail of bullets from a North Carolina regiment that thought he was the enemy. Although his wounds didn't seem life threatening at first, Jackson contracted pneumonia after having his left arm amputated and died eight days later.

What was your first car? What happened to it?

Let me know in the comments.

My first car was a powder-blue 1977 Ford Pinto, which I named Scout. I bought it from helgabee's stepmother, who was going into a nursing home and didn't need the car anymore. It didn't have a huge number of miles on it. I got it in 1987, and it lasted until 1989 -- through most of my college years, basically.

It wasn't the most comfortable car in the world, the FM radio stopped working at some point, it went from 0 to 60 in two hours, and if you went over 70 it started to rattle, but that car got me through most of my time at Fordham.

Most memorable trips were both in 1988: five of us packed into the thing to go to a pro-choice rally in Washington, D.C., and cramming seven people into it to drive across the Stony Brook campus during I-Con to see The Wrath of Khan on a big screen (only to find that the showing was cancelled, the bastards).

It died when I had the second accident in a single calendar year with it. The front grille was crushed and I didn't have the money to repair it again. (The first accident, from which it was fixed, wasn't at all my fault; the second, tragically, was, and it happened in Sturbridge, Massachusetts to boot.)

Your turn!
