30-day TV/movie meme, Day 4

This is a nifty meme where each day you cite something about movies and about TV for a month. (Or longer when you don't get around to doing it for six days. Oops....)

Movie Day 04 - A movie that makes you sad

Sextette, which made me sad for the state of humanity as we know it. Runners-up include Can't Stop the Music, Evil Brain from Outer Space, and the entire oeuvre of Uwe Boll.

TV Day 04 - Your favorite show ever

The Wire. I'm a sucker for a good police procedural, and this is the best one ever done, because it recognizes the realities of true police procedure: it's ultimately not a calling or a crusade, it's human beings doing a job just like other human beings doing a job. It's the most cynical show ever produced, it's funny as hell, it's tragic and comic, and it's more real than anything you'll ever see. Probably the best examination of urban life in the early 21st century.

Hell, the whole show's worth it for the "fuck" scene in the first season. Two homicide detectives go over a six-month-old crime scene, and they communicate solely with variations on the word "fuck" -- yet they communicate quite eloquently. Great great stuff.

Stupid History 25 May 2010

Contrary to popular myth, lemmings do not commit mass suicide. The origin of this lemming tale is traced to the 1958 Walt Disney film, White Wilderness. One scene shows a dozen lemmings "dutifully tossing themselves over a cliff into certain death in icy Arctic waters." The filmmakers staged the suicide scene, but when the lemmings refused to voluntarily go over the cliff, they were tossed over by the film crew.
