Maurice Sendak, RIP

Maurice Sendak has died at the age of 83 after complications from a stroke.

Sendak was the author of a ton of influential children's books, most notably Where the Wild Things Are, though my personal favorite was always The Nutshell Library (which was adapted into song by Carole King for Really Rosie in the 1970s).

However, my favorite Sendak story is personal. Before he hit it big as an author/illustrator, Sendak worked at FAO Schwarz, the famous toy store in New York City, putting together window displays. My grandfather also worked there, as a bookkeeper. (This resulted in me getting a lot of spiffy toys as a child....) One day, Nonno came over to the house, saw a copy of Where the Wild Things Are, stared at the byline, looked up at my parents, and said, "Murray wrote a book?"

Rest in peace, good sir. *raises glass*

midweek music: "Alligators All Around"

Sorry for not doing a Monday music -- I've got a houseguest this week (my good friend Helen Lake), and between trying to get writing and editing in and showing her NYC, I've been a bit busy.

But in tribute to the late Maurice Sendak, here's Carole King performing "Alligators All Around" for the Really Rosie TV special from 1975.

Helen's New York Adventure

My friend Helen is in town, and so far she's a) gone to see The Avengers with me, Wrenn, Dale, and Laura Anne, b) seen Times Square, Bryant Park, the New York Public Library (including the Winnie-the-Pooh stuffed animals), and the Hudson River, c) been to a taping of The Daily Show (thanks to Bonnie for the tix!), and d) gotten a couple of home-cooked meals.

Today is the Bronx Zoo, tonight is the Yankees-Rays game -- with luck, rain won't spoil either overmuch. Tomorrow, we do the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Ground Zero. The latter will be the first time I've been to the former World Trade Center site since the Nebulas were in town in 2007.

Friday, she goes home. She's taken a ton of pictures, and I'll try to snurch a few and put them up once she's gone home.
