I done went and voteded!

I done went and voteded! wrenn and I were Voters #69 & 70 in our district, which is pretty good for 8 in the morning. (I went with her to vote before she drove off to work.)

While I stuck with all Democratic candidates -- not to be in lock-step but because I agree with them more than I do their Republican opponents -- I voted where possible in the "Working Families" column (what used to be the Liberal Party before their acceptance of Rudy Giuliani made them a laughingstock, so they changed their name to reform their image). This is mainly because I'm not happy with the Democratic Party, either. A minor symbolic gesture, but it's important to me.

I've said this before, but it bears repeating: I miss New York's big glunky voting machines where you flicked a switch to register your vote and then you pulled a big-ass lever and it made a satisfying THUNK. That felt like voting. Now you fill in circles and a computer scans it in, and I don't feel like I'm voting, I feel like I'm taking the SATs. *sigh* (I understand why we don't have them anymore: the company that manufactured them is out of business so maintenance has become increasingly difficult. The machines' days were numbered. Still. *sigh again*)

Star Trek: The Next Generation Rewatch: "Tapestry"

"Welcome to the afterlife, Jean-Luc. You're dead." Picard gets to re-live his sordid youth and winds up a junior-grade lieutenant in astrophysics on the Enterprise. The TNG Rewatch thinks it's a wonderful "Tapestry."

An excerpt:
The alternate Enterprise scenes are brilliant; seeing the great and noble Jean-Luc Picard as a middle-management functionary is epic. The moment when he humbly tells La Forge that he’s on his way, ending with a very subservient “sir,” your heart breaks at how the mighty have fallen. (Am I the only one who wanted the astrophysicist to whom he was assistant to be played by Gary Cole talking in a montone? “I’m gonna need you to go ahead and take this statistical analysis to Commander La Forge, ’kay? That would be great. Thanks!”)

I done been groomed

Got my hair and beard trimmed today:

The same guy's been cutting my hair for 25 years now. I've followed him to three different salons, and he is an absolute master. Those of you who've been impressed by my hair all these years? It's all him.
