midweek music: "Sultans of Swing"

Dire Straits was always one of my favorite bands. A group with a refreshing guitar/bass/drums sound in the height of the punk and new wave revolution of the late 1970s, they had an unlikely hit in 1977 with "Sultans of Swing," an affectionate tribute to a jazz band. In 1985, they'd have their other big hit, "Money for Nothing," which remains one of the ten great guitar riffs in rock history.

Here's two performances of "Sultans," one from the LiveAid concert in 1985, the other from a 1996 Knopfler solo concert.
