Arlo Guthrie concert in Princeton

I really need to get "God of Blunder" finished tonight, so a full report on today's Arlo Guthrie concert at the McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton will have to wait. Short version: this was the best of the five Arlo concerts I've seen in my life (once as a kid in Central Park, once at Carnegie Hall in college, once in 2008 in Patchogue, again at Carnegie Hall last Thanksgiving, and today). This is not to say the other four were bad, they were excellent, but Arlo was just on today. Great stories, great musicianship, great songs, including several of my favorites. Arlo is so well known for his rambling stories and his excellent voice, people forget that he's also a superb musician -- one of the most talented guitarists you'll ever see, and an excellent pianist and harmonica player. His guitar work was particularly stellar today.

The set had a lot of his father's songs, continuing the celebration of Woody Guthrie's 100th birthday that started last summer and will continue into this spring, though it was less Woody-intensive than the Thanksgiving show.

Here's the full set list:
    "Oklahoma Hills"
    "Pretty Boy Floyd"
    "St. James Infirmary"
    "Haleiwa Farewell (Haleiwa Blues)"
"When a Soldier Makes it Home"
"Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)"
    "1913 Massacre"
    "I Hear You Sing Again"
    "Do Re Mi"

    Intermission

    "Coming Into Los Angeles"
    "Alabama Bound"
    "Mooses Come Walking"
    "Old Shep"/"Me and My Goose"
    "St. Louis Tickle"
    "City of New Orleans"
    "Highway in the Wind"
    "This Land is Your Land"

    Encore: "My Peace"

Okay, back to writing....
