read this

Stop what you're doing right now and read this piece by my good friend Rebecca Glass. Just read it. Seriously.

An excerpt:
Back then, you never thought about being a woman in the industry. It was the 90s after all; feminism was over because women had full legal equality in the US, and if you were campaigning for women’s rights you did so for the likes of women in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. You never thought about women not being allowed in the press box until the 1970s, because you were born in the 1980s and thus the 70s might as well have been the 1400s. You never really thought about what a toxic work environment might feel like because the possibility simply doesn’t occur to a girl who’s taught that equality is good and inequality is bad.

Eventually, though, you grow up. You learn that people will argue about whether or not a referee is acceptable just because she’s female. That according to the Super Bowl ads that football is, well, a man’s game and if you happen to be a woman who likes it, well that just makes you weird. That Michael Vick can serve two years for dogfighting and be considered the scum of humanity, but when Ben Roethlisberger gets accused of sexual assault (something that’s happened more than once), charges never get filed. The abuse of dogs, it seems, is more reprehensible than the abuse of women.

"Just Like a Woman" by Richie Havens

on the road again...

We're off soon to Roanoke, Virginia, which is a horse-choking seven-hour drive, though at least we don't have to take I-95 to get there. Tonight is the event at the Roanoke City Main Library, and then there's MystiCon 2013 from Friday to Sunday. Here's my schedule; try not to break anything while I'm gone. :)

As usual, weekend updates are more likely to be found on Facebook or @KRADeC on Twitter.

The final, full manuscript for Ragnarok and Roll: Tales of Cassie Zukav, Weirdness Magnet has been sent to Plus One Press for the mighty production process. This is a collection of short stories about Key West, Florida, Norse gods, scuba diving, folklore, and rock and roll.

We'll be releasing three stories as eBooks in the weeks leading up to the book's release, under the general title of "Cayo Hueso." First will be Part 1: "A Farewell to Cats," then Part 2: "The Buck Stops Here," concluding with Part 3: "Twisting Fate."

Shortly after that, the book itself will be released. It will include:
"Ragnarok and Roll" (originally printed in Tales from the House Band Vol. 1 and reprinted in Apocalypse 13)

"Undine the Boardwalk" (originally written for Bad-Ass Faeries: It's Elemental, which will be published later)

"I Believe I'm Sinkin' Down" (originally printed in Tales from the House Band Vol. 2)

    "Love Over and Over"

    "Cayo Hueso"
Part 1: "A Farewell to Cats"
Part 2: "The Buck Stops Here"
      Part 3: "Twisting Fate"

    "God of Blunder"

Bonus track: "How You Can Prevent Forest Fires..." (originally printed in Urban Nightmares)

Keep an eye on the ol' blog for updates on when the "Cayo Hueso" stories are released and ordering info for the book and such.
