NYY, melky

Tuesday's dead

Today was a good day. I read over Gryphon Precinct and adjusted some things that needed adjusting, and was generally pleased with how it turned out.

After that, we hopped into our car and drove out to Central Islip to see the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League play a baseball game against the Lancaster Barnstormers. This was in honor of Kathleen David's 50th birthday, for which her husband Peter purchased a suite, complete with plenty of food and drink. Wrenn and I and a cast of several joined them for a delightful celebration, which included a visit from Bud Harrelson, the former Met who co-owns the Ducks, as well as from Quackerjack, the Ducks' mascot.

The party was more fun than the game. The Ducks exploded for five runs in the first, but their bats went silent after that, while the Barnstormers came from behind to eventually win 9-5.

Then we came home, after purchasing a souvenir bat, and watched some TV before I realized something important that was missing from Gryphon Precinct. I've been in the process of fixing that. Now I should really go to bed..............

    "Silver Thunderbird" by Marc Cohn

twelve years ago....

I gotta admit, I totally forgot that today was the twelfth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, until a new friend messaged me and asked what I was doing that day.

So I sent her what I jokingly called The Collected Ramblings of Keith R.A. DeCandido Regarding 11 September 2001:

My thoughts on the day, and the days after, as they happened.
My thoughts on the one-year anniversary.
My thoughts on the four-year anniversary.
My thoughts on the six-year anniversary.
My thoughts on the whole nonsense in 2010 about "the mosque at Ground Zero," which was neither of those things.
My thoughts on the death of Osama bin Laden.

Her response was amusing: "I'm noticing a developing pattern of cynicism." She's not wrong........

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Rewatch: "Profit and Loss"

Odo rounds up the usual suspects, Quark asks Morn to play it again, Garak is shocked to learn that there's gambling in this establishment, and the problems of one Ferengi and one Cardassian don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy quadrant. The DS9 Rewatch does "Profit and Loss."

An excerpt:
Having failed to convince Lang, Quark works on the students, convincing them that he can get them away from the station safely. He has come into possession of a battered old cloaking device that’ll only work for about fifteen minutes or so, but he’ll give it to Hogue and Rekelen—if they can convince Lang to stay. But she refuses to stay with him and insists that he give her the cloaking device, going so far as to point a weapon at him. Quark is convinced she won’t shoot him, which he believes right up to the moment when she shoots him.
