Star Trek The Original Series Rewatch: "Plato's Stepchildren" - KRAD's Inaccurate Guide to Life
ramblings from a mad fedora'd writer
Star Trek The Original Series Rewatch: "Plato's Stepchildren"
It's the worst Star Trek episode ever. Yes, worse than "Spock's Brain" or "Profit and Lace" or "Threshold" or "Shades of Gray." Seriously, this is just awful. SOMEONE RIDES KIRK LIKE A HORSE! WHILE HE WHINNIES! The TOS Rewatch wants nothing to do with "Plato's Stepchildren."

An excerpt:
And then there’s the entire middle part of the episode during which William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy abandon all pretense of dignity and act like total fools in a manner that is supposed to be humiliating to the characters, but is far more humiliating to the actors, from Kirk slapping himself over and over and over and over as we fade to commercial to the mind-bogglingly awful “Maiden Wine” to Kirk’s fun with bullwhips to Spock’s flamenco dancing. The moment when Alexander rides Kirk like a horse while the latter whinnies every four seconds is quite possibly the absolute nadir of Star Trek as a franchise, and yes, that includes “Profit and Lace.”

Current Mood: geeky geeky
Current Music: "Dad's Gonna Kill Me" by Richard Thompson

This was a horrible episode, but I'm not sure that it's worse than "Spock's Brain."

And I can't recall, have you done "Wink of an Eye" yet?

I haven't done "Wink of an Eye" yet -- that's next week -- but I have done "Spock's Brain," and I honestly think the episode gets a bum rap. As I said in my review, its reputation is far in excess of its actual quality, which is not good by any means, but far from the worst Trek has to offer.
