we will probably survive this - KRAD's Inaccurate Guide to Life
ramblings from a mad fedora'd writer
we will probably survive this
Long term, the U.S. will survive. We've survived the country being sundered, we've survived natural disasters, we've survived world wars, we've survived attacks on our soil.

Short term, we're probably seriously fucked. Surviving as a country is one thing, but I'm genuinely scared for the individual lives that will be lost by the free pass that a Trump presidency will give (real or imagined) to bigots and predators who wish to be violent toward their targets, and by the people (like me and Wrenn) who will lose their health insurance, and by the people whose lives will be lost in any war that we get involved in because our president has no self-control.

The only way we get through the next four years is if Trump proves incapable of working even with a Republican Congress and nothing actually gets done. I don't expect this (though it would be in character), but I see it as our only avenue to individual survival.

At this point, I'm more scared of Pence, than I am even of Trump. Trump won't do any actual work, it's not in his character. So he's going to leave the majority of the power in the hand of a homophobic bigot who hates women, and who's going to enjoy every chance he has to take away any and all rights from those people he doesn't approve of.

I'm scared of Trump the same way I was scared of W. Bush, which is to say, what you said.

Like Bush Sr., Trump is the safest man in the world right now, because no one wants a Pence presidency.

If somehow Pence and Trump would cease to exist, then we end up with Paul Ryan.

I have never been so ashamed of my race. I have so many brown friends (as they refer to themselves) who now have had it made clear they are not wanted in here that I want to weep.

Speaking of "any wars we get into"...

How does this strike you as a scenario that looks inevitable because it would - in a non-Trump USA - be improbable?

My poor Maggie's birthday is today. I suspect that "a Donald Trump presidency" qualifies for the most terrible present ever.

I'm terrified. Living in California will probably insulate us from some of the possible results, but climate change is a worldwide issue. And (apparently unlike wide swathes of the electorate) I have empathy for religious and racial minorities wherever they live. Nothing but contempt for people who think they are lifted up by punching down.
